Raj Ashok Ghadi was born on 3 May 2012 in Jamsande, India, with several joint contractures. He was later diagnosed with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC). Raj Ashok lives in a large family with 10 members. His mother Ranjana is a housewife and his father Ashok is a farmer. As a result of the remote location, his physical condition and the lack of healthcare facilities, Raj has mostly been cared for at home and attended the first form of the local school for one year. His uncle liked to draw and occasionally talked to Raj about his art. This was the beginning of his career as a mouth painter.
Raj was admitted to the orthopaedic department of Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children in Mumbai, where the entire team of healthcare personnel, doctors, nurses, auxiliary staff and even other parents and children were impressed by his ability to establish himself as an artist. As the hospital is a charitable institution, his diagnoses, treatment costs, medication and hospital stay were financed by health programmes and donations.
