At the age of five Juan Carlos Menjivar-Moran stepped on a landmine near his home. Thanks to the quick help of soldiers who were stationed nearby he was admitted to a hospital in San Salvador, where his life was saved as if by miracle. However, he suffered a severe disability as both arms and legs had to be amputated. In spite of his disability he went to primary school and was a good pupil. When he was 12 years old, he began to paint with the mouth. Today he regularly attends painting classes.
