Born on 15 February 1959 in Fresno (California).
In January 1975, at the age of 15, Doug had a wrestling accident at high school where he suffered a fracture of the cervical vertebrae that left him tetraplegic from the neck down.
Since his mother thought that he spent too much time in front of the television, she encouraged him to start drawing and gave him a pencil to hold with his mouth. Doug taught himself to paint and patiently developed his own style that is characterised by delicate and complex details. Art became one of his many hobbies. After finishing high school, he took a BA in communications at the Webster University in St. Louis. He then went to California, where he graduated from the California Institute of the Arts (CALARTS) in Valencia with a M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) in animated graphics. The institute was founded by Walt Disney.  At the CALARTS Doug made two animated short films which were presented at the film festival of the American Film Institute.
Recently Doug has moved from delicate pencil sketches to colour experiments with Conté-chalk, watercolour crayons and acrylics.
