Maria Socorro Juárez Peñuelas was born on 1 July 1966 in the town of Los Mochis, Sinaloa. She was the sixth of nine children and has a twin brother. She completed primary and secondary school in her hometown. Maria Socorro Juárez Peñuelas married at the age of 17 and had three children. From the age of 20 on she started to have problems with her hands and feet. She underwent a medical exam and was found to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. As it is a chronic progressive disease her hands and feet have become deformed. She also suffers from severe joint pain. In July 2010 her friend Perla Fabiola Espinoza Vega (student member of the Association) encouraged her to have a go at mouth painting. She took the advice and right from the start showed great interest in and commitment to painting. The artist has been able to continuously improve her artistic skills.
