Henriette Nyhammer Vik was born on 9 August 1990 with a spinal cord tumour, which paralyses her nervous system. As a result she has no controlled movement in her legs and limited movement in her arms.
In her daily life she uses her mouth to deal with everyday tasks. As a child Henriette did sport to strengthen her body. At the age of 6 she was able to walk with some help. When she was 8, the spinal cord tumour started to grow and she had to have an operation to remove part of the tumour. After the operation Ms Vik lost control of her body, and had to use her mouth to help herself.
Henriette has always greatly enjoyed drawing and is creative. She has had many other hobbies and enjoyed handicrafts, but during the Covid lockdown she decided to try watercolours. Painting is a hobby she can practise on her own and without help. In 2019 she completed her psychology course with a Bachelor’s degree.
In May 2022 she decided to resign from her job and concentrate on her art. Painting gives Henriette a great feeling of happiness and strength.
