Luísa Hage Vieira was born on 8 October 2010 in Salvador. As a result of a prenatal illness, she was born with arthrogryposis, a condition that causes the joints in the upper and lower limbs to stiffen and makes normal use of these extremities impossible.
She was raised by her grandmother as her birth parents had abandoned her. The barriers imposed on her were not, however, sufficient to prevent her from developing writing, drawing and painting abilities. At the age of four, Luísa was already showing an interest in art and began to develop her drawing with the mouth. Her grandmother recognised at an early stage the dexterity that Luísa demonstrated with her mouth, and searched tirelessly for art courses and exhibitions to further promote her granddaughter’s talent. At that time, her grandmother decided to encourage her and found a painting teacher who helped to improve her techniques. Since then, she has participated in exhibitions, sold several paintings and even appeared on television programmes.
Through these efforts, Luísa has been able to establish contact with artists of various genres and exhibit her works at important places in Salvador. During the pandemic, she took a break from her artistic work, but at the same time established a close relationship with two married teachers, Cleide and Dielson, from her former school. This special connection led to a “collective adoption”, and the couple now lives together with Luísa and her grandmother under one roof, enabling them to form a new family.
