Dr. Santina Portelli has been paralysed in all her limbs since birth. She moved with her parents to Milan at the age of 6 where she still lives today. After graduating from secondary school she studied the history of art and foreign languages. She began to study the psychology of child development in 1975 and was awarded her PhD at the University "La Sapienza" in Rome in 1985, having submitted a psychological study on "Life with a Disable-ment". In earliest childhood she loved to play and mess with colours and in school rapidly became one of the most promising art pupils. In the following years she learned the technique of painting in oils in master classes with Gianni Guidolini Santamaria. Although she still prefers this technique, she cultivates a wide artistic repertoire and is also an accomplished ceramics painter. Santina Portelli constantly improved her technique and her expressive powers through her contacts with the masters at work in the artist's studio. She received her first scholarship from the Association in 1966. She became an associate VDMFK member in 1994 and has been a Regular Member since 2000. Her painting is an expression of contemporary beauty, which is not to be found in the mere abstract formalism of line and colour, but rather in the morphological purity of her composition revealing what is most essential to the human spirit: the eternal agony within.Santina Portelli has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Italy and abroad during the course of her artistic career. She has also won many different prizes and acknowledgements for her work.
