Carlos Augusto Berrío Betancur was born on 9 November 1952 in Medellín, Antioquia. He was born as the second son of a family of eight and at an early age had to assume responsibility for the education and livelihood of his siblings. He therefore held different jobs. At the age of 23 he began to work for the public utility company in Medellín as an energy assistant. While working in this job, he had a fall accident at the age of 46 that resulted in complete luxation of the C5, C6, C7 vertebrae and the spinal cord (tetraplegia). Encouraged by his wife, he became involved in art and especially in painting. Later on, he met artist Héctor Jairo Tamayo, student member of VDMFK, at a meeting of disabled people, and was able to make significant artistic progress. Oil painting has become one of the most satisfying activities in his life. In the meantime he has had the opportunity to present his artwork to the public at exhibitions.
