I was born on December 24, 1988 in Los Mochis, Ahome, Sinaloa. My parents are Rafael Herrera G. and Petra Chávez A., and I have a sister and a brother. My father works as a driver of a waste collection vehicle and my mother stays working at home and caring for me because I was born with infantile paralysis and my hands do not respond well. It is very difficult for me to hold anything and I cannot keep my body balance. When I try to stand up, I fall. My mother has to feed me, bathes me and helps me in every aspect.
When I turned six my mother took me to school and I was not accepted due to my disability. Years went by and I turned 11 and then I met a little 6 year old girl who taught me how to read and write.
I don´t speak clearly but can be understood at home. I met Perla Fabiola Espinoza who is disabled like me and she studies painting. She showed me how she painted and I became so interested that I also wanted to do it. Every afternoon I would go to her house to practice. She then told me about the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists and that they support people with disabilities in their arms that are willing to learn to paint with their mouth or foot.
I sent in my application to the Association of Painters and also some samples of my paintings so they could learn about my efforts. Fortunately, I was accepted in March of 2007. I wanted my parents to see that I could do something with my life and the Association gave me the opportunity to do this.
I am very happy to be working in the Association since I receive financial help and I can pay the teacher that gives me drawing classes at home two days a week, and on Fridays I attend the arts vocational school with teacher Lidia Cháidez.
I am grateful to God that Perla Fabiola came into my life. My goal is to study primary and secondary school and improve my painting by learning new techniques.
