Jean-Michel Artis was born in Argenteuil on 19th February 1954. At the age of 10, he learned that he was suffering from a muscular disease. He understood that this illness would determine his destiny and that he would have to learn to live with it. From the age of twelve onwards he was confined to a wheelchair, as the progression of the illness deprived him of the use of his limbs. Nevertheless, he completed his education, achieving his school-leaving diploma by distance learning. In 1993, respiratory problems made it necessary for him to be fitted with a permanent respiratory aid. This shook his life to its foundations. At present, he lives in Maurepas (Yvelines), surrounded by his small family. His son Elie was born in 2001, and is his father’s greatest joy. His first encounter with painting dates from December 1994. This form of expression enables him to escape and to forget that life is sometimes hard. His love for the landscape in the Poitou region, where he rediscovers his roots, inspires most of his pictures. He delights in contact with nature, and depicts landscapes and old stones in an Impressionist style. He is clearly one of the most promising talents, and deserves all our support.
