Retrospective: 50-Year Jubilee

Jubilee exhibition of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists of the World (VDMFK) (registered association) in Vienna under the honorary patronage of the President of the Federal Republic of Austria, Dr Heinz Fischer.

2007 was quite a special year for the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists: 50 years ago, on the initiative of Arnulf Erich Stegmann,16 founding members met in Vaduz, to hold the first general meeting of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists of the World. This meeting did not only signal the completion of the official founding of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists of the World; it was also the hour of birth of a success story which - with currently about 730 artists in 70 countries - is still ongoing. The reasons which drove Arnulf E. Stegmann at that time, have not lost anything in relevance: "In the world in which we live today, which frequently is so hostile towards the physically handicapped, an association like this provides a great opportunity to overcome difficulties more easily, whether these are in the field of art or life in general."

Celebratory festive meeting in the Viennese Hofburg

The Jubilee Week which was attended in Vienna by a large number of mouth and foot painting artists from throughout the world from 30 April to 5 May 2007, was also characterised by this social impulse and the informal atmosphere. The artists together with the association and many art lovers celebrated the 50-year Jubilee of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists of the World. The festive celebration in the Viennese Hofburg marked the start of the festivities. In the morning more than 400 guests experienced a varied programme in the decorated and atmospherically illuminated rooms. Mrs Christine Marek, the Secretary of State in the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economics and Work, was responsible for the ceremonial opening of the festive meeting during which the book "50 Years Association of the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists of the World" was presented as well as a film which had been produced especially for the occasion.

Jubilee exhibition with more than 250 works at the Albertina

In the evening of this Jubilee day the opening of the art exhibition in the Albertina, certainly Vienna's most famous museum, was an impressive event. During the opening addresses and lectures it was difficult for the visitors to get standing room; the pictures and sculptures, however, were on display over a spacious area in five large rooms. There was tremendous interest in the painting demonstrations by the artists during which the visitors could experience at close quarters how a picture is painted by mouth or by foot. The Viennese public and the guests staying in the city were able to enjoy the exhibition until the following weekend. The members of the VDMFK displayed their ability in carefully selected and clearly presented pictures. The magnificent rooms of the Albertina were filled with the remarkable variety in colours and subjects to be discovered in more than 250 works of art - and helped the exhibition to achieve success.
