Short Biography

I am Alexander Craig born on November 27th, 1957, Auckland, New Zealand, to parents where the father is of Irish-Scottish and the other of Samoan-Tonqan descent. I grew up in Henderson, West Auckland in the 60’s and 70’s in a predominantly wine growing area. I attended Henderson North Primary School. In Henderson Intermediate School I was selected to be in the "under 14 year-old" rugby team called Roller Mills. Then I attended St. Paul's College, a Catholic Boarding School in Ponsonby, Auckland run by the Marist brothers. I am the eldest of a family of 5 boys and 1 girl. On January 5th, 1974 at the age of 16 year I injured my neck as a result of a diving accident at a popular swimming spot with the local children in West Auckland. I was a patient in Auckland Hospital for 4 years, then I was transferred to Otara Spinal Unit. I moved into the Community about five years later. In 1993 I became a basketball coach for able-bodied students in social, college and representative level. At representative level I coached boys of under 14 years and 16 years of age and 3rd Division men’s basketball. I found children very receptive to my instruction. I realised that it was important to me to be involved in sports and mix with sports-minded people. Coaching basketball fulfilled this aspiration and I saw that my contribution could make a difference. Other interests I have are playing Bridge, Chess, Backgammon, listening to music, photography, watching sports, also visiting art galleries, museums, and I enjoy meeting new people. I was introduced to painting by mouth in 1979 by Bruce Hopkins who was a member of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists. I received a scholarship from the AMFPA in 1980. John Andrews, a renowned New Zealand surrealist and figurative artist, influenced my early style. Later I was tutored by a Doreen Jones of Maraetai, Manukau City in representational work (i.e. landscapes). It was through her that I developed a love for painting. I was under her tutorage for two years and attended various workshops with other New Zealand artists. I joined West Auckland Arts Council in 1990 where I painted and exhibited with other artists, who were all very supportive. There we exchanged ideas and techniques which I adapted to my mouth painting abilities. I participated in many multi-artist exhibitions. In 1991 I won the Bruce Hopkins Memorial Art Award. In 1992 I became a full member of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists. 1994 I attended summer school at Elam of Fine Arts at Auckland University. I paint in oil, watercolour and acrylic. The themes I paint: landscapes, still life, floral and figurative. Exhibitions: 1982-83-84 A.M.F.P.A. Downtown Auckland 1988-90 A.M.F.P.A.
