Short Biography
Johnny Ang Yam Kwang suffered a diving accident at the age of 19 which left him paralysed in all his limbs. He continued his study of journalism even after his disability in a home course. This opportunity was opened up to him through the Colombo Plan grant of an Australian university. He continues to work today as publisher and writer of various publications to promote the interests of disabled people and is also a committed voluntary worker for organisations that help the disabled.
Having taught himself to paint with his mouth, Johnny Ang Yam Kwang began his career as a mouth painting artist in 1989. A scholarship from the Association enabled him to intensify his commitment to painting. From this start he moved on to gain the status of Associate Member in 1997 and Regular Member in 2000. His preferred subjects are the bridges, houses and monuments of Singapore as well as illustrations of the rich mythology of his homeland. He is also fond of painting fish and orchids which are so popular in Singapore. Oil and acrylic are the principal media employed by Johnny Ang Yam Kwang. He has frequently been able to present his extensive works to a broad public at home and abroad.
